I think this quote is a metaphor for my entire experience at the Bologna Book Fair. And I mean that in a good way.
Full disclosure: On the hotel shuttle ride to the convention center this morning, I sat next to two Italians. They spoke rapidly the entire time. Halfway there, I caught a single line of heavily-accented English: "Clowns are the new vampires." I asked them to repeat themselves, as I wasn't sure I'd heard correctly. They obliged. Everyone in the van spent the next 15 minutes giggling. I actually cried.
Then we started coming up with tag lines. I'm still not sure where this quote originated--and the two Italians couldn't speak enough English to explain--but who cares?
We collectively discovered that clowns can't be limited. Fallen Angels can be clowns, too, people. Any new vampire can.
"Why won't he take off that oversized bowtie?"
"I can see beneath your make-up. Your plastic fat suit...mm, not so much."
Chime in. Honestly, those tag lines are pretty lame. We were all tired. But where there's a seed of a brilliant idea in YA, genius is sure to follow.
