Hey all you YA lovers –
We’ve got a fantastic new voice in YA contemporary: Laurie Boyle Crompton. Her debut novel features a comic-obsessed teen, Blaze, who gets into an online war after her first major crush dumps her super villain-style. It’s fun, it’s quirky, and it needs the perfect title. This is where you come in.
About the Book:
Blaze is tired of spending her life on the sidelines, drawing comics and feeling invisible. She’s desperate for soccer star Mark to notice her.
I’m just stuck in ‘secret identity’ mode. That is, I’m a terminal Clark Kent/Peter Parker character, lying low as I hang out with my little brother and his horny friends. Pretty much invisible. But not a sexy Susan Storm in blue lycra sort of invisibility. More of a ‘don’t-make-eye-contact-with-the-sad-blonde-fangirl-who-is-always-drawing-comics- sort of invisibility. I try imagining a superpower that would reduce my attractiveness to pubescent boys, while inversely making me more alluring to uber-hotties like my brother’s coach, Mark. ‘Putting out’ is likely the missing plutonium to that puzzle.
When her BFF texts Mark a photo of Blaze in sexy lingerie, she definitely gets his attention. And after a few hot dates, Blaze is flying high, but Mark’s feelings seem to have been blasted by a freeze-ray and he dumps her. Blaze gets revenge by posting a comic strip featuring uber-villain Mark the Shark. Mark retaliates by posting her “sext” photo, and Blaze goes from Super Virgin Girl to Super Slut overnight.
The battle royale begins.
With that in mind, we present you with some title options:

I don't like any of these as much as FANGIRL, but I wonder how you feel about a blend of two of the suggestions. I like Flirting is a Superpower and Love in the Time of supervillains because they both sound like the plot - Blaze as a comic book hero (or villain) in her head.
What about: Supervillains in Love
Permalink Reply by Patty Blount on May 16, 2012 at 7:11am Revenge of the Super-Dumped ?
Plot-Induced Stupidity ?
Love in a Thought Bubble ?
Permalink Reply by Christina Franke on May 16, 2012 at 7:57am Oh hey,
So I definitely like the title Fangirl the best. Of these, I like the last three the best. My Own Worst Enemy is kind of boring.
Just please, please do not use Flirting Is a Superpower. Fangirl sounds like a book I definitely want to read, and FIaS does not. It sounds like it's going to be lame, the title not the book.
Love in the Time of Supervillains might be my favorite, because of the Garcia Marquez reference.
Permalink Reply by Brenna Staats on May 16, 2012 at 10:47am I liked Fangirl, personally- it caught my attention, and gave me an idea that there would be a superhero theme in the book. I actually kind of like Patty's suggestion of "Revenge of the Super-Dumped" or Rachel's "Super Flirt" one- it has a nice ring to it, and definitely suggests what the plot is about. "Flirting is a Superpower" sounds a bit more like a tagline than a title to me. Of the above ones listed in the original post, Love in the Time of Supervillains sounds the best to me, because I like the blend of love & supervillain idea, but it feels a tad too long.
Permalink Reply by Hélène Boudreau on May 16, 2012 at 10:55am I prefer FANGIRL but from the choices, I'd say THE INVISIBLE TRUTH OF BEING ME.
Suggestions:
SET TO STUN
WALLFLOWER IS MY SUPERPOWER
WANTED: BOY DECODER RING
Permalink Reply by Patty Blount on May 16, 2012 at 11:00am I seriously freakin' LOVE WANTD: BOY DECODER RING!!!!
Also, saw this on a comic book site: COSPLAY. It's short for Costume Play.
Still likin' FANGIRL most.
Permalink Reply by Michelle Julian on May 16, 2012 at 11:09am FANGIRL is my fav, too!! Please, please, please NOT Flirting is a Superpower, I find it kind of offensive! If I HAD to choose, I'd say GEEK GIRLS RULE, but seriously what's wrong with FANGIRL!!
Permalink Reply by Mike jung on May 16, 2012 at 11:29am I like LOVE IN THE TIME OF SUPERVILLAINS, partly because of the echo of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and partly because I think it encapsulates the story in a pretty sophisticated way, but my first choice would still be FANGIRL.
Permalink Reply by Mike jung on May 16, 2012 at 11:30am Oh, and just to second what some others have said - FLIRTING IS A SUPERPOWER is terrible. Holy crap, whatever you do, don't use that one.
Permalink Reply by Michelle Julian on May 16, 2012 at 11:40am If the title must be changed, what about keeping the original title and adding a little extra?
FANGIRL and the SUPERVILLAINS
or
FANGIRL VS. SUPERVILLAINS
Permalink Reply by Jeanne on May 16, 2012 at 11:48am Hmm. FANGIRL has an immediate zing to it that the options above do not, IMO. If you must change it, I like all three of the suggestions by Helene. (Or perhaps you should just go with Super Slut. Haha.)
Although the excerpt says Blaze is blonde, I notice the cover art adds some distinct red to her hair. If that's not just my imagination, maybe you could use it in the title, e.g. PoweRED, or "Pow!Red!". (If the red is my imagination, nevermind.)
